Mathematics plays a major role in a child’s development and helps children make sense of the world around them. It is an important part of learning for children in the early years because it provides vital life skills that will help children problem solve, measure and develop their own spatial awareness, and teach them how to use and understand shapes. In the Nursery we can build on children's numeracy and maths skills through play. We provide children with lots of everyday activities like counting, looking at shapes, talking about sizes, sorting toys and singing number rhymes that help children develop early numeracy and maths skills. We plan daily lessons using the White Rose maths mastery approach which focuses on reinforcing number competency whilst providing opportunities to build on reasoning and problem solving by using manipulatives which encourages each child to build in confidence and resilience to achieve in maths.
