Literacy in Reception

Literacy in Reception supports children with speaking, listening and attention, reading and writing.  It is a large part of the ELG (Early Learning Goal) that all children are expected to achieve by the end of their Reception year.

It is crucial for children to develop a life-long love of reading. Reading consists of two dimensions: language comprehension and word reading. Language comprehension (necessary for both reading and writing) starts from birth. It only develops when adults talk with children about the world around them and the books (stories and non-fiction) they read with them, and enjoy rhymes, poems and songs together. Skilled word reading, taught later, involves both the speedy working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and the speedy recognition of familiar printed words. Writing involves transcription (spelling and handwriting) and composition (articulating ideas and structuring them in speech, before writing).

At Cranford Park, there is a real emphasis on spoken language, which sits at the heart of our English teaching. We encourage a need to talk and to experience a rich diet of oracy skills, in order to think and to learn. There is an expectation of all children speaking in full sentences and teachers consistently modelling academic talk, ensuring vocabulary development.

In Reception, we follow Pie Corbett’s ‘Talk for Writing’ model for teaching narrative writing skills. We focus on a different text every 2 weeks. During the first week of teaching the children learn the new vocabulary in story through role play and retelling the text in their own words before moving onto the writing stage in the second week.
