PE Curriculum Statement

At Cranford Park Academy our aim is to provide a P.E curriculum which enables each child to reach their full potential. It provides opportunities to experience a wide range of both team and individual sports which improve both their physical and social skills.

Our P.E strives to improve children’s fitness in fun and structured ways. At CPA, we offer an exceptionally broad curriculum which is supplemented by a range of extra-curricular clubs both before and after school. This allows children access to familiar sports such as football and tennis alongside less well known sports such as bocce, golf, badminton and archery.  This is a deliberate strategy to encourage children to enjoy and experience a wide variety of sports they might otherwise not have encountered, e.g. Paralympic sports, and increase the chance of them finding their own personal passion. Children from Year 1 to Year 6 are given opportunities to represent the school in an extensive range of Federation and Borough competitions.

Outdoor lessons are taught by a P.E specialist whilst indoor lessons are led by the class teacher and cover dance, gymnastics, badminton and dodgeball. Our gymnastics lessons follow the Real Gym curriculum which develops fundamental movement skills via gymnastic activities, providing a springboard for future opportunities.

At Cranford Park we offer regular swimming as part of our P.E curriculum. We offer swimming in both Years 3 and 4 as we recognise that for the majority of our children our lessons are their first experience of being taught to swim and being comfortable in and around water. The lessons are designed to improve children’s water safety, confidence and competence in both a pool and open water with the goal of leaving school being able to swim unaided at least 25m.

Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Cranford Park, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the fundamental values and disciplines that PE promotes. Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Our desired impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.
