French Curriculum Statement

At Cranford Park Academy we believe that learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. Language education should foster children's curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

The modern foreign language taught at Cranford Park is French. Our planning is based on the QCA schemes of work which covers all the components of the Programme of Study. The units have been carefully sequenced and adapted by a specialist French teacher to ensure continuity and progression.  All French lessons in Years 3 to 6 are taught by a native French speaking teacher. Children in year 2 are also offered the opportunity to attend an after school French club. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics, which include: All about me, numbers, colours, the school day, planets, growing things, food, celebrations, clothes and hobbies Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through the learning of French phonics using the Physical French Phonics scheme, conversational work, singing activities and games.

Our curriculum builds children’s knowledge of French to give them a sound foundation for secondary school specialist teaching. Federation skills ladders ensure that children are developing a range of language skills alongside their core knowledge. In addition, events such as an annual French Day and French performances in assemblies enhance provision further.

It is intended that when children leave Cranford Park they will have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages. They will have an understanding that in a multilingual society it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language.  They will be engaged and prepared to continue language learning at secondary school.
